With many stories in both the Local Press and on many British EX Pat websites warning people about the "Loss of UK TV in Spain" many new start up Companies that have simply appeared over night are now jostling to sell IPTV boxes to British Families on the Spanish Costa del Sol. As March 2014 draws closer many of these new start up Businesses are now offering products that may or may not leave many people disappointed. We would like to make you aware of what to avoid.

We have spoken to many people that have been poorly advised and have ended up wasting money a Raspberry PI box in Spain that is really difficult to use and totally relies on the likes of Filmon to provide BBC1 and ITV, our question has always been "What happens if Filmon gets shut down?"

Every time we have asked this question on certain Forums and Facebook Groups the comment has either been deleted or we have received lots of nasty comments as many of the people selling these IPTV boxes that are based on Raspberry PI running XBMC or Raspbmc to watch TV in Spain will not admit that they are a waste of time and money.

We have had many people contacting us saying;

1. We are really unhappy with the Raspberry PI in Spain
2. XMBC is really difficult to use and far too complicated
3. XBMC keeps crashing
4. XBMC Spain is a waste of time for watching UK Television
5. Raspberry PI really is so frustrating to use
6. I eventually got XBMC working but PI melted after 2 hours

With the date now set for February what are the real options for UK TV shows in Spain?

 

With many different suppliers jostling to promote the brand and or service that they are selling some people are becoming confused by the vast array of options and solutions that are available.

 

 

We have been amazed just how many new start up Businesses have just appeared over night offering various types of IPTV and internet based services. Many of these start up Businesses are trading off nothing more than a pay as you go disposable mobile phone and a Facebook page.

When choosing a solution to the possible loss of UK TV on the Costa del Sol & Portugal in February 2014 you need to first decide what channels you will be happy with, and how much you want to spend.

With several suppliers singing from the roof tops and praising Raspberry PI as a solution, we must disagree due to the following reasons;
 

1. Raspberry PI is incredibly difficult to program
2. Raspberry PI is incredibly difficult to use
3. Raspberry PI is relies on FILMON and or offshoots of
4. Raspberry PI offers no live support
5. Raspberry PI is a opensource service with streamers making no money out of streaming so if  the service is removed they are under absolutely no obligation to get you back up and  running.
6. Raspberry PI is NOT a proper solution to the problem.

Example - Austin Toombs is a PhD student in Human Computer Interaction Design in the School of Informatics and Computing at Indiana University, he is a "Tech" savvy PhD student in Computer design and even he has had issues using a Raspberry PI to watch TV, please do not take our word for it Google it and read his complaints that include; These are the words of Austin Toombs -

So I tried to have it install raspbmc itself through the boot menu that comes as part of the NOOBs package. That ended up looking like it would work really well, but then at the last minute, after it started trying to connect to the servers and update itself, then all I would get were kernel panics. I don’t think it had much to do with my power supply or my keyboard / mouse setup (which seems to be the “have you tried restarting it yet?” of the raspberry pi world) because it would at least get as far as connecting to the servers.
He then says "Man it’s amazing how computer illiterate I can be sometimes, even with a background in computer science"

What chance does your average Family living in Spain have of conquering a piece of kit that is a nightmare to use and set up?

OK so we have a PhD student unable to get to grips with his Raspberry PI and then it gets even worse when he says.....

"It’s really hard to work on these kinds of projects when there are only a few minutes at a time when we can figure it out. I think to really get it working, I’m going to have to section off an entire day or a large chunk of a day, make myself lots of coffee (or maybe something that will relax me for when I get frustrated with all of the “connection timed out errors”

He called using a Raspberry PI a "Project" not entertainment!

This is still our opinion with reference to Raspberry PI as a solution to the possible loss of UK TV on the Spanish Costa del Sol and Portugal.

 

 

Everyone agrees that Filmon could disappear, and if it does you may be left with a worthless Raspberry PI and a mini keyboard that comes with it or often sold separately.

Raspberry PI uses Raspbmc and Raspbmc has a Facebook page so you can read the comments of hundreds of confused & fed up people trying to watch TV with this device.

If you have been sold a smart tv box or smart tv or android or raspberry pi or xbmc system box and are experiencing headaches or sore eyes then you may be very surprised at the information below.

Many people have complained about getting headaches

and others have found that they are straining to watch poor quality TV channels and in some cases people can actually damage their eyesight and then have to spend a fortune on expensive prescription glasses.

Terrible picture quality of a "smart tv box purchased on the Costa Blanca"





On the Costa Blanca we have received loads of complaints from people that have purchased a smart tv box only to find the picture quality unbearable. With most of our clients owning the latest high definition TV sets they want a HD picture not a poor quality grainy picture like you get when using a so called smart tv box.

 

If you want the best possible HD TV Picture SKY+HD is the best picture available in high definition. If you simply cannot have a dish then you should take a look at the HD IPTV MAG-250 IPTV BOX as this box allows you to select what quality picture you require and connects to your TV using a HDMI cable. Recent e-mail from a concerned Costa del Sol resident –

I recently bought a new 40-inch LED TV from MediaMarkt for our villa in San Pedro, a neighbour recommended a supplier who sells a SMART TV box that he told us would allow access to UK TV if we connect the box to the internet, since having everything installed I have noticed that my eyes really hurt after watching the TV. I have tried changing the settings for on the TV but still my eyes hurts even after 25 minutes
sometimes. 

When we watch a DVD the picture quality is so much better and I do not get sore eyes. I initially thought that it must be something to do with the Television settings, I tried to contact the supplier of the smart tv box but despite several failed appointments with us waiting for a visit we decided to ask a local satellite installer to take a look, I don’t want to complain to my neighbor as I suppose he was only trying to help and our Daughter has just made friends with the twins so do not want to moan about the issues to him. 

I called a local satellite TV installer and as soon as the satellite engineer noticed the smart tv box he let out a sigh and said "That is your problem there, that box is useless" he went on to tell us that this type of box is ok for a standard definition picture although with our TV having such a big screen and being LED that the picture the box supplies is not good enough and that we would better off buying a UK SKY+HD BOX with a PPN router so we can get bbc and itv through the internet after the big switch off. 

The engineer also had a Mag250 iptv box with him that he has left with us for the weekend and I have to say that I am very impressed with the picture and channel line up and the catch up is also really handy as is the video library. 

I would greatly appreciate your advice what you think the best option is.

Hi Darren

Yes – Having a SKY+HD box is a great option you will require a UK VPN router + set up
an account with SKY UK. With a SKY subscription costing just £300 a year this is by far the best option with the best picture quality on the market for UK TV.

As far as that smart tv box is concerned ask for a full refund and if they refuse ask for
the complaints book. So sorry to hear about this, we advise you stop using that
so called smart tv box immediately as it could be damaging your entire Families
eyesight as the picture quality is not good enough for your new LED TV, imagine
buying a Ferrari and then topping off the tank with diesel. This is not good
and these poorly manufactured Chinese boxes seem to be flooding the market and leaving many unhappy customers. 

Unlike SKY HD or a HD IPTV box such as the MAG-250 these cheap & nasty Chinese
"Smart TV" or as we call them "Not so Smart TV" boxes offer a cheap quick fix and many people have made the same mistake, a 40" LED TV should have built in up-scaling however these so called smart tv boxes have such a poor picture when using Filmon that this may be why you have been experiencing sore eyes. Always a good sign if a supplier offers to leave a product with you to try we agree that the MAG-250 is a fantastic box although some people do prefer the superior picture quality of the SKY+HD BOX especially the newer WIFI model that can be supplied for around €400.
